For much of modern history, Europe has been a hub of discovery and innovation, with knowledge and technology spreading from here to the rest of the world. This legacy and the experience that comes with it positions Europe well to remain a leader in the global technology race.
However, currently, we observe intensifying competition from the United States and China, and geopolitical shifts have disrupted valuable supply chains. These developments, coupled with pressing environmental, climate, and demographic challenges, demand immediate and innovative solutions. Who better to provide these solutions than engineers?
The European Ranking of Engineering Programs, EngiRank, has showcased the impressive potential of European technical higher education, with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) ranking at the top. Together, EngiRank and DTU host the upcoming Brussels Seminar Educating Engineers for an Innovative and Sustainable Europe. This seminar takes place against the backdrop of the upcoming Polish and Danish Presidencies to the European Council in 2025. It thus takes the opportunity to explore the priorities of the presidencies, and discuss how technical universities in collaboration with industry can play a pivotal role in addressing them.
The seminar invites policymakers alongside industry representatives to outline their needs when it comes to the next generation of engineers – how can technical universities further support the education of future engineers who can contribute to the green transition and ensure economic security and competitiveness? Based on this discussion, we will collectively explore how to evolve and strengthen universities of science and technology, as highlighted by the EngiRank system, so that together we can meet the demands of modern industry and European priorities.

First Session: Research priorities of the Polish and Danish Presidencies – where do technical universities play a role? Both Poland and Denmark strive to support the green transition and work to strengthen economic security during their Presidencies to the European Council in 2025. In this session, research attachés from the Polish and Danish EU representations delve into these priorities, and through dialogue with university representatives discuss how technical universities can support these priorities. Chair: Marek Pawelczyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Chairman of the CRASP International Committee Speakers:

Second Session: European Industry Collaboration – what is the vision for increased collaboration between industry and technical universities? Currently we observe intensifying competition from the United States and China, and geopolitical shifts have disrupted valuable supply chains. These developments, coupled with pressing environmental, climate, and demographic challenges, demand immediate and innovative solutions. This panel explores how these solutions arise from collaboration between industry and engineers. Industry experts present their priorities, thus outlining how universities can adhere to these, so we together can strive to educate the engineers needed to sustain Europe’s competitive future. Chair: Simon Elben Hertig, Office for Research, Advice and Innovation, Technical University of Denmark Speakers:

Third Session: New perspectives on technical universities – what is needed to enhance and strengthen institutions? To meet industry’s needs, technical universities and how we perceive them need to evolve. Several top European universities of technology are engaged in such transformation processes that are significant not only for those universities but also for the region and the society they operate in. EngiRank, the engineering ranking system developed by the Perspektywy organisation, offers a new generation of ranking by combining a regional approach with a focus on education of competent and creative engineers. In this session, EngiRank’s approach will be explored alongside the experiences and reflections of leading technical universities.
